White Roof Benefits

greenstar17Does the color of a roof matter? Definitely! A white roof will absorb much less heat than a darker one. Studies have shown that a dark roof can get up to about 150 degrees in the summer sun, but a white roof will be at least 50 degrees cooler all day.

This means that your utility bills will be lower, your indoor comfort will be increased and your roof itself will last longer because it is not under as much stress.

But that is not all! Cool roofs can also benefit the environment as a whole, especially if they are all located in the same area. They can actually reduce the air temperature via what is known as the urban heat island effect. (Our goal is to coat 10 million square feet of rooftops in New Orleans in order to greatly reduce this effect.)

In addition, cool roofs will lessen electricity demand at peak times, which can help prevent power outages. They will also lead to reduced power plant emissions.

Why does a white roof help?

white roofIt may just look like white paint, but these cool roofs are much more than that. They are coated thickly with a reflective pigment that does not absorb the sunlight, thereby keeping your roof much cooler. The coatings we use are also extremely waterproof.

If you have a low-sloped metal roof and it is uncoated, it will not reflect the sun as well as one that has been treated. These cool roofs are obviously most beneficial in areas with hotter climates like Louisiana.

A few more technical details: A roof is measured by its SRI, or solar reflectance index. This shows how well (or poorly) a surface will reflect solar heat while also radiating absorbed heat. With a black roof, the reflectance would be close to nothing. In the case of a white roof, however, the reflectance can be as high as 90 percent.
